But of course! We Filipinas are no exception to having make-up mishaps! I can see it everyday, probably because of the lack of available information, I really don't know, but HEY! we make mistakes right?! and LEARN from them WE SHALL!
So, I've listed my 10 Makeup Mistakes Filipinas Don't Realize Making!
1. SLAPPED ON CHEEKS!
In the Philippines, its called "Parang sinampal yung pisngi!" which translates in english as "Like cheeks that has been slapped!" due to excessive blush on cheeks, improper application and non-blending. I SEE THIS EVERY DAY! I was once guilty of this during my Highschool days, mainly because we Filipina women covet the lovely pink blushing face of caucasian women, probably that is why we tend to excessively put on blush.

We love you Christina! But the blush color is totally wrong! This kinda reminds of fair filipinas who overdo the pink blush. |
Solution: Find a place with Good Lighting when you apply your blush, Get a good blush brush, Practice makes perfect! and most importantly choose the right color for your skin! (I will do a blog post on this)
2. Wearing Blue Eyeshadow
One thing about blue eyeshadow, only three types of people can wear this. Little girls who do performing arts, ethreal models, a 70's themed party and MY ALL TIME FAVORITE, SM Department Store Sales Ladies! - or just any grocery or mall where you see sales ladies here in the Philippines. I ACTUALLY DO NOT GET WHY BLUE SHADOW, Is it a uniform? but, it is SO WRONG. Unfortunately, for the longest time, we Filipinas got accustomed to looking at it that we don't mind it, that its just a part of their uniform. But really you should not! You will look like a clown the second you walk out of your room.

Yikes!!! Wrong foundation, wrong eye color, wrong blush, wrong hair...just...wrong wrong wrong. |
Solution: Blue eyeshadow only goes well on some people, you can play up the Blue eyeshadow when clubbing, but keep in mind that the way you apply it is 90% on the over all impact of how good you want it to look. But really, its not a proper everyday eyeshadow color.
3. Wearing the WRONG FOUNDATION SHADE
All of us are guilty with this at some point! I remember whenever here in the Philippines there would be like local contests, events (Sta. Cruzan etc.) I feel so sad looking at young girls, because, its either their makeup artist is BLIND to see the wrong shade that it did not enhance their features, rather this made them look OLDER! and HOW WEIRD is that, when the face is whiter and the neck and the rest of the body has a beautiful sun kissed glow! Just wrong... its either its TOO LIGHT OR TOO DARK and in other cases, it looks like TOO ORANGE.

Solution: TEST IN YOUR JAWLINE NOT ON YOUR HAND. TRY FIRST BEFORE BUYING. Make sure that it is the CORRECT shade and not just because you want to cover up imperfections, these are the things that you should be meticulous about because It has a great impact.
4. Using pencil on eyebrows
Guilty! This looks very unnatural, and it just looks WEIRD. But many of us still uses pencils to fill in eyebrows, unless your really skilled and you can make it look so darn natural. But for most Filipinas I see everyday, its always pencil eyebrows and it just looks wrong, like it looks like someone drew over their foreheads or something. Not good.
See what I mean?

Solution: Select an eyeshadow color that will match your eyebrow hair color, use a stiff, thin, angled brush and apply using tiny stroked and just follow your natural brow shape. This frames the face so well and thus creates a more polished look.

5. Wearing BLACK EYELINER in DAYTIME and BLACK EYELINER CAT EYES in DAYTIME
Oh sure Filipinas are FOND of K-POP and their awesome black cat eye liner, but...In the real world, you don't use them as a DAYTIME look. It looks heavy and your suppose to make your eyes look open and awake. Black eyeliner makes the eyes appear smaller. The black cat eyes looks great on asian eyes, but it doesn't look appropriate for an everyday look when going to work. Another thing is that the way it is applied, MOST filipinas go overboard and apply this very thick on the eyelids, its not cute. It looks weird.

Solution: For a daytime look, use brown eyeliner instead to soften it up, and does not have the goth undertones, in that way, the brown eyeliner which is lighter advances the eyes and brings the eyes forward unlike the black eyeliner that makes the eyes recede. Use thinly with an eyeliner brush, do not exaggerate and wing out the eyeliner (for daytime it looks weird).
6. Wearing WEIRD colored contact lenses
First of all, I would like to say, that blue/pink/purple/gray etc. contacts on filipina women looks weird especially if these women have tanned/olive skin. If its for the sake of fashion, please do not do it when your at work or school or any event or place that you wear uniform/needs formality. You can make the colored contact lens work if you have the appropriate eye makeup to dress it up/occasion, but for the most part, most Filipina women nowadays just puts it on because they think it looks cute, HONEST OPINION? ITS NOT. Even the crazy/anime lenses, its weird and it looks dirty (unless your in a cosplay). It doesn't compliments the filipina skin, plus it sends a wrong signal to most people that your trying hard to get attention.
Solution: Pick colors and lens diameters that are neutral and makes your eyes beautifully natural and effortless that compliments your features.
I Recommend: CM-958 (Berry Holic Honey) from Geo Lens. See Image below:

She wrote a product review on these lenses.
7. Over tweezing or ignoring your eyebrows!
My mom is sooo guilty for over-tweezing, she is so OCD like that, because when she tweezes she would always think that it looks uneven, and now she only has like half of her eyebrow and she has to pencil it out. Remember that when you get older, the hairs in our eyebrows get sparse, so when you over tweeze, the hairs might never fully grow back.

And of course, most often, Filipina women really don't mind tweezing their eyebrows, they just leave it bushy and all. This is such a NO-NO, because brow grooming is important because it adds up a beautiful frame to the face. You don't want to look like an amazonian do you? with all that over grown hair!
Solution: Go to a professional to get proper eyebrow shape, or if you opt to DIY, clean up the are around your brow and follow natural arch for the eyebrow shape best shape.
8. TOO MUCH HIGHLIGHTS/ILLUMINIZING PRODUCTS ON FACE!
I have seen this in many Filipina actresses...this has always been OVERDONE! And it looks weird, because illuminating products are used to make your face look glowing and fresh, but too much of it look like you just went out of a pool of oil. Just by looking at it makes me uncomfortable,
In some cases, too much highlighter would look like this:

Park Ha Sun is extremely pretty, so is this dress, but that NOSE! SHE HAS TOO MUCH HIGHLIGHTER ON HER NOSE! This is what it looks like when you put in too much highlighter and you go somewhere where there's extreme lighting. I thought it was powder. Sad.
Solution: Use Highlighters/Illuminating products only on parts of the face that sticks out, I found this great guide from www.beaut.ie where its all about highlighting products and how to do it, the right way.
I Recommend: I use Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder Duo (P1,400) and a Fan Brush (any brand) when highlighting.

9. Forcing a high-bridged nose
This is like....the ultimate must for Filipinas. Filipinas would kill for that kind of nose, and whenever we cannot get that, we of course, force it out by...CONTOURING! Sure, contouring is easy as long as you do it at the right places but IT ONLY LOOKS GOOD ON PHOTOS. When you see it in actuality it looks WEIRD. YES, A FORCED HIGH-BRIDGED NOSE LOOKS WEIRD. And if your not so skilled, it will look extremely FAKE. So that's FAKE AND WEIRD.

Solution: Use a lighter shade of foundation on the bridge of your nose and blend downwards or you can subtly use a highlighter on your bridge to create that effect. Remember, If it looks fake, your better off without it.

10. DIRTY BRUSHES!!!
I seriously did this, I asked 13 of my friends when was the last time they cleaned their brushes, more than half of them said "never". Cleaning brushes is a HUGE part in our hygiene, because this could lessen the breakouts we have to deal with and a more flawless makeup application will result!

8 Response to 10 MAKEUP MISTAKES FILIPINAS DON'T REALIZE MAKING: FILIPINA EDITION
Love this post :)
Thank you! <3
I think these are mistakes lots of people make, regardless of ethnicity. Nobody told me when I was a teenager that over-plucking my eyebrows would make them stop growing! :-( Now I have to draw them on (no, not the pencil-fine line type!) to make them look normal. Little eyebrows make people look angry/scary. Figure it out, ladies!
Your absolutely right Bridgett! These are mistakes most girls make, but the most popular ones here in the Philippines. I don't know if its like a trend or what especially the ones that looks like cheeks that has been slapped for like a gazillion times! SAD. BTW, The eyebrows would not grow like as rapidly or as bushy as they used to be ones you get older, but it grows. You probably need like an eyebrow serum or something, I'll research on that though. ;)
This isnt happening just in the philippines! It happens all over the US too!
yes it does! these are the MOST common ones here though :) hope u guys do a blogpost on this for those in the U.S. so we all know that its every girls dilemma. Its so nice to see that we share the same things with other people around the world :)
I almost forgot! (how could I) The WORST most annoying mistake filipina girls make (to me) is trying to be Blonde, and it almost always comes out Orange, the even sadder part is, her friends will encourage this blonde hair coloring so she continues to do it! Im full blooded pinay, morena and proud of my dark skin and hair, Why cant she love her natural beauty too? LOVE to everyone!
I couldn't agree with you more :) but maybe shes trying out a different style or experimenting? Just be reminded that nothing can compare to natural beauty. Because natural beauty is the most flattering type of beauty you could have. This is how God made you, Beautiful. Cheers!
