CLUELESS FILIPINA EP.9: KEEPING YOUR MAKE-UP CLEAN

CLEAN

This is such an important topic, especially for MUAs. Make-up like food also has an expiration date. Make-up can remain stable  for a couple of years when it is sealed and unopened and stored at room temperature, but from the moment you take it home and open it, this can be a haven for bacteria.

Contaminated make-up can hasten the expiration date.

So here's a few "BASIC" tips to prevent that from happening:

1. Hand washing - srsly. This is the MOST BASIC thing. Everything our hand touches could possibly have bacteria, therefore make sure to wash your hands properly before handling make-up/touching your face.

2. Sanitizer - After hand washing I like to apply this just to make sure that I did not miss out on anything. I have a huge supply of alcogel.

3. Palettes - If you're doing make-up on yourself or on others, better transfer it onto a palette (scrape off from lipstick or any make-up and transfer onto palette), and make sure that the tool you used in transferring the make-up is clean (palette spatula, spoon, etc.) spray it with 99% alcohol prior to use. The key here is to avoid DIRECT CONTACT of the make-up and skin. I just use a cheap plastic palette, the ones that are used for painting, these are about $0.50-$1.

4. Good Housekeeping - Another basic concept. Preferably a cool dry place for your make-up/room temperature. Do not store make-up on warm areas of your room. Do not store it in your bathroom, since your bathroom harbors the most bacteria than in any other place in your house. Make sure that you clean your train case/vanity/drawer regularly, because that too can harbor bacteria.

5. LIMIT SHARING - Sharing is fun but this spreads bacteria way fast especially in sharing lipsticks and mascaras, you could get an infection. If you're a MUA make sure that you separate your personal makeup from the ones you use on your clients.

6. Alcohol - a trick I have learned from gossmakeupartist, is spraying makeup with 99% alcohol. ANY MAKE-UP. From lipsticks, palettes, eye shadows, powders, etc. Do not use 70% alcohol, because the remaining 30% is water and may affect your make-up's performance. 99% alcohol dries faster. Spray before and after using and every time you have a new client.

7. NO DOUBLE DIPPING - Rule of thumb. especially when using disposable mascara wands for clients, or just any make-up that requires you to double dip. That is why use a palette! Also, regularly cleanse you make-up brushes, preferably, wash your brushes each and every night, or after each use.

8. Mascara Hygiene - Run your mascara wand with hot water and spray with 99% alcohol. This is how you can keep it clean, plus a clean mascara has better performance than dirty ones.

9. Regularly replace your make-up, remember the last post regarding expiration dates.

10. Sharpen Pencils - This shaves away contaminated surfaces and gives an added precision of course.

11. Tissue - Wipe your powder products with a tissue after each use, removing any oil that has settled on the top of your product, thus removing the possibility of oil collecting on the product and harboring bacteria.

Hope this helps, and if I missed out anything, please do comment down below, I wanna know other ways too. Ciao! XOXO
